The Women’s Game is an exclusive editorial series written by writer, broadcaster, and former college and pro soccer player Renee Washington for BrooklynFootballClub.com. Each week, Renee goes behind the scenes with Brooklyn FC Women, giving unique insights into the squad and sharing stories of the people behind the crest.

For Brooklyn FC Women’s defender Antoinette “Annie” Williams-Arlington, soccer has always been about more than the game itself. It’s been a way to explore new places, build meaningful relationships and discover who she is beyond the pitch.
A native of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Annie played collegiately at South Dakota State before beginning a professional career that has included many stops. She has played for Deportivo Saprissa in Costa Rica, ÍBV in Iceland, IFK Kalmar in Sweden, and Parma in Italy before joining Brooklyn FC.
Each new environment has offered her an opportunity to develop as both a player and a person.

“I’ve loved getting to travel the world, live in different countries, and learn more about myself along the way,” Williams-Arlington shared. “Every country and team I’ve played for has taught me something different, and I feel like I’ve been able to take something from each experience and add it to my game.”
That openness to learning has become a defining part of her journey. Whether adjusting to a new country or connecting with new teammates, the defender has come to value the personal growth that accompanies a career in professional sports.
Finding Balance Beyond Soccer
Away from competition, Williams-Arlington prioritizes the interests and relationships that keep her grounded. Reading, running and spending time with family are among the ways she creates balance, while her curiosity about the mental side of athletics has grown into an academic and professional pursuit.
After experiencing challenges of her own throughout her playing career, Williams-Arlington was inspired to pursue a master’s degree in sports psychology.

“I wanted to better understand the mental side of sports and eventually help other athletes work through challenges, build confidence, and reach their full potential.”
Her interest in confidence and personal well-being carries into everyday life, too. The experiences she has gathered on and off the field have reinforced the importance of continuing to learn about herself.
A Connection to Community
Growing up in Minnesota also helped shape Williams-Arlington’s awareness of the world around her. Her experiences there contributed to a passion for social justice, particularly racial justice and immigrant rights.
Now, as a member of Brooklyn FC, she sees another opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds and celebrate the communities that make the city unique.
“I also strongly believe that sports are for everyone, and that everyone deserves to feel a sense of belonging,” she shared. “I hope to use my platform to bring people together, celebrate our differences, and help create spaces where everyone feels welcomed and valued.”
It’s a perspective that complements the lessons she’s gathered throughout her international playing career. For Williams-Arlington, joining a team is about more than finding her place within a lineup. It’s also about building relationships and contributing to the community around her.
Brooklyn’s diversity has made an impression on the defender, who appreciates the opportunity to represent a club surrounded by so many cultures and backgrounds.
As she continues her journey with Brooklyn FC, she brings those values with her to the pitch.
“My faith and family are such important parts of who I am, and I hope those values reflect in the way I play and carry myself both on and off the field.”
For Williams-Arlington, the next chapter is another chance to keep learning, connect with others and use the game she loves to make a meaningful impact.
