Brooklyn, NY. (August 22nd, 2026) – Brooklyn FC Men were defeated 1-0 by the Pittsburgh Riverhounds as a result of a late free-kick in the 83rd minute.
Brooklyn controlled much of the first half against the Riverhounds, maintaining 57.6% of possession, completing 50 more passes than the visitors, and kept a 70% passing accuracy.
The first big opportunity came from a chipped ball over the defensive line from midfielder CJ Olney Jr who was looking for forward Markus Anderson. However the Pittsburgh goalkeeper, Nico Campuzano was alert and rushed out to clear it.
The duo almost connected again in the 14th minute. A free-kick from Olney was sent into the box and found Anderson, while also deflecting off a Pittsburgh defender to hit the crossbar.
The Riverhounds’ biggest chance came in the 29th minute from a corner. The cross found midfielder Eliot Goldthorp at the back post, but his volley was blocked by Brooklyn goalkeeper Jackson Lee, who returned to the lineup for the first time since May 31. Shortly before halftime, Brooklyn defender Thomas Vancaeyezeele hit a personal milestone, reaching 15,000 career minutes in the USL Championship, and both teams headed to the locker room scoreless.
Brooklyn continued to threaten throughout the second half but could not find the breakthrough goal. In the 65th minute, Anderson was set free on a breakaway and cut onto his left foot, before unleashing a shot that went straight at the keeper.
Brooklyn continued to look dangerous from set pieces, and in the 79th minute came close again. Another cross from Olney was headed by defender Callum Frogson, but was ripped over the bar by Campuzano.
Pittsburgh eventually got their winner in the 83rd minute through a direct free kick from midfielder Sam Bassett.
Brooklyn continued pushing for an equalizer and coach Marlon LeBlanc made his final subs to try and push the balance in their favor. Forward JC Obregón Jr entered the match in the 89th minute to make his 100th career USL Championship appearance. Unfortunately the equalizer did not come and Pittsburgh narrowly won 1-0, although Brooklyn put up a valiant effort against one of the stronger teams in the Eastern Conference.
