BROOKLYN, N.Y. & Tampa, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2024) – The United Soccer League today awarded a USL Super League franchise to Brooklyn bringing the first professional women’s soccer team to call Brooklyn home.
Super League Brooklyn is part of the Brooklyn Football Club and will play in the inaugural season of the USL Super League kicking off in August 2024. The team will play home matches at Maimonides Park in iconic Coney Island.
“The growth of women’s soccer is unprecedented, with record-setting TV viewership, sponsorship interest and youth advancement. We are honored to be partnering with the USL Super League to bring top-tier women’s professional soccer to Brooklyn, which we believe will represent an important hub for the future of women’s soccer in America and across the world.” USL Super League Brooklyn Chairman Matt Rizzetta said. “This marks a notable milestone for our club, our borough, and our city, as our USL Super League team will compete at the highest level of women’s soccer and expand on our mission to empower players, coaches, and fans to grow the game in Brooklyn.”
“The time is now for professional women’s soccer, and we can’t wait to show the world the passion of Brooklyn’s women’s soccer community,” Brooklyn FC CEO Mack Mansfield said. “We are committed to meaningful engagement with the local community and will develop a brand and a team that authentically represents our home city and its vibrant soccer culture. We have a lot of work to do
between now and August, and we are excited to ramp up and be ready to go when the USL Super League kicks off.”
Also today, the USL Super League confirmed it will compete at the highest level for professional women’s soccer in the United States, following the U.S. Soccer Federation’s approval of the league’s Division One sanctioning application.
This decision aligns with the USL Super League’s commitment to the highest operational standards in bringing professional women’s soccer closer to home for more players, more fans, and more communities across the United States.
“This is a tremendous moment for the USL Super League and for women’s sports,” said USL Super League President Amanda Vandervort. “Receiving Division One sanctioning further showcases the work that our ownership groups, our clubs, and the league are doing to create a professional environment for top-level talent to compete. This is a crucial step toward realizing our vision to be a global leader in women’s soccer on and off the field. We cannot wait to see our clubs take the field when we kick off in August 2024.”
The USL Super League’s inaugural season will feature clubs in eight markets, including Brooklyn, Carolina, Dallas/Fort Worth, Fort Lauderdale, Lexington, Spokane, Tampa Bay, and Washington (D.C). The league’s expansion pipeline includes clubs in Chattanooga, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Madison, Oakland, Palm Beach, Phoenix, and Tucson. These clubs will take the field in subsequent seasons, upon completion of stadium projects and other important club development initiatives.
Unique for soccer in the United States, the USL Super League will play on a “fall-to-spring” calendar similar to most leagues around the world, providing the best possible experience for players and fans and respecting the timing of major international events.
